Introducing…The YLs Course

It’s been a very busy few months at London School of Languages as we prepare our new online teacher training course. But what exactly is this course, you may ask? Well fear not, here are the top ten things you should know about what the course has to offer and how it all works:

  1. You have 24 weeks to complete it

Once you have completed the application form you will have 24-week access to the online platform. In this time, you will have to complete the 20 course modules and submit 2 pieces of written work in order to receive the end of course certificate.

  1. You observe real teachers in real classes

The modules are made up of articles, presentations, tasks and videos. These videos will include: interviews with teachers, introductions by well-known experts in the field of ELT and clips of real classes at 4 different levels. Last week we recorded these classes and a great day was had by all! These classes aim to demonstrate what the course tells you and will show you how to put everything into practice in class.

  1. There are course tutors

There will be course tutors on hand to answer questions and provide weekly summaries of issues discussed in the course forum. We will also be running webinars throughout the year to provide course participants with further information and practical ideas to support the content in the modules.

  1. There are 20 modules

The course consists of 20 modules on different aspects of teaching YLs. These include: classroom management, error correction and feedback, technology in the classroom and reading skills. Each module is designed to take around 3 hours, but this depends on each individual and how much time they wish to spend on each section.

  1. There is plenty of downloadable content

There is downloadable content in each module which you will be able to download, print and use in your classes. This material is designed to support what you learn on the course and what you see in the observed classes.

  1. You can take an official exam at the end of the course

The course content is designed to prepare participants for the Cambridge Assessment English TKT:YL exam. If purchased at the same time as the online course, this can only be taken in San Sebastián, Spain (centre ES409). The exam will take place three times a year (March, July and November) and participants must specify which exam they would like to do when they sign up. However, this is an exam which can be taken globally, and participants will be given guidance on how to find a suitable exam centre if they wish to take it in another location.

  1. There is an optional face-to-face element

There is also the option of attending a face-to-face element of the course which will help you put into practice what you have learnt on the online course. This 6-hour session will take place on a Saturday (April or October) and will be run by the course tutors.

  1. You don’t need any previous teaching qualifications to do the course

In order to complete the course, you must be over 18 years of age and we highly recommend that you have at least a B1 level of English and some experience in teaching English, either to adults or YLs. We don’t ask you to provide proof of any other teaching qualifications.

  1. If you are also interested in CELTA, there is a discount

The course has been designed and written by official Cambridge Assessment English CELTA tutors, who have significant experience in teaching YLs and teacher training. As such, the course complements the components seen on the CELTA perfectly. Whilst the CELTA focuses on the teaching of adults, The YLs Course will give you more in-depth knowledge of the teaching of under 18s and the issues teachers may face in the classroom. If you want to take the CELTA and The YLs Course, there is a special price offered to those wishing to take both. Note, this only applies to those taking the CELTA in San Sebastián (ES409) and not any other centre.

  1. We offer an institutional discount

If you work for a school in which there are a significant number of teachers who would benefit from The YLs Course, then we offer an institutional discount, which will be applied when 6 or more teachers sign up for the course at the same time.
